My research has ranged from lived experiences to the social-cognitive development of deaf children and young people.
Some of my research has been published in academic journals – you can find these listed on the left hand side of this page.
I undertook the largest survey with Deaf LGBTQ+ people in the UK (2019) to find out their needs and wants; https://deafrainbowuk.org.uk/deaf-lgbtiqa-consultation/.
I led the largest survey with Deaf children and young people in the UK for the National Deaf Children’s Society (2007) – looking at their needs and wants and its youth strategy development until 2018.
I worked for Consortium – a national charity with LGBT groups in the UK – I was responsible for both the analysis and collection of useful information from over 400 groups in the LGBT+ sector who experience Intersectionality/ies (2020). This information was used to inform a forthcoming significantly funded project with the National Lottery, launched in January 2021.
I worked with colleagues at University College London and carried out a small project re the experiences and wants of Deaf Migrants in London in 2022; https://shorturl.at/bKBmj.
I also worked with colleagues and achieved a small funded project to develop further, Deaf LGBTQ+ related glossary in British Sign Language. https://shorturl.at/wIMYd
Currently I am finishing off a funded project for the Greater London Authority on key recommended policy changes to better meet the needs and experiences of Deaf Migrants in London. This has been developed with Deaf Migrants and a research advisory board with a range of lived experiences; https://shorturl.at/jixFx
All of my research has always included the engagement and collaboration of people with lived experiences.
I have often given advice/consultancy to many researchers in the field. For example a project called “How do Deaf BSL users experience suspense in film?” https://player.sheffield.ac.uk/events/rethinking-subtitles-deaf-audiences and https://player.sheffield.ac.uk/events/animating-inclusion-film
